While the waves make this a deeply appealing destination in the summer, there is much more to see and do in this quintessential surf town. Nature takes the limelight in January with a gorgeous sight. Monarch butterflies depart the coastal eucalyptus trees to finish their migration, which means those here get to witness these fluttering insects fly off.
Hiking and wood trails are ideal too. The rainy season has passed, revealing luscious landscapes and flowing waterbeds, adding music to the already stunning views. Plus, the iconic Redwoods are nearby.
Santa Cruz boasts a train tour to behold these statuesque towers in all their majestic glory—a particularly good idea if you’re with young kids or family members with mobility issues. Local wineries are also a great way to discover the treasures of Santa Ynez, as is a walk along Santa Cruz Wharf or exploring one of the many museums.
