Monaco lies on the French Riveria, halfway between Nice and the Italian border. It has a direct train line to Paris and a dedicated helipad to the nearby airport of Nice. With so many easy ways to get to Monaco, there’s no excuse not to visit. Whether you’re passing through on a tour of the French Riveria or you’re lucky enough to spend a few days here, this Monaco travel guide contains all of my favorite things to do.
Since the 19th century, Monaco has become a tourist destination for ordinary travelers and the rich. It is one of the most expensive and wealthiest spots in the world. It is often called a tax haven with favorable tax laws and policies. But you don’t have to take out a bank loan to visit here. There are many ways to see the beautiful city of Monaco without breaking the bank.
With only .78 square miles to explore, Monaco is the second smallest sovereign state in the world, after the Vatican City. But this excitingly packed place has so many things to do and see. During my visit, I saw some incredible things and learned a few local secrets along the way, and I want to share them with you. So, let’s look at the best things to do and see in Monaco.

The Old Town of Monaco is centered on “The Rock,” which is known as “Le Rocher.” This is where you’ll find many of the main attractions on this list, such as the Prince’s Palace and the Oceanographic Museum. But between the stars of the Monaco show are plenty of old-world alleyways and charming streets filled with cafes and shops to explore.
I like to start my trips by wandering around the old town, getting a feel for the atmosphere and the people before I do anything. Sit down with a bite to eat and a refreshment, and enjoy the warm breeze across Le Rocher. Whip a map out and make plans if you haven’t already made them. This is what I suggest you do first.

One of my favorite attractions during my trip to Monaco was the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. It was opened in 1910, making it one of the oldest aquariums in the world. It took 11 years to build the foundations into the side of the rockface. There are aquariums dedicated to the Mediterranean coast, tropical fish, sea turtles, coral reefs, and a shark lagoon too.
The museum was founded by Prince Albert I, the great-grandfather of the current Prince Albert II of Monaco. The first floor is dedicated to the life and works of Prince Albert I, called the “Prince of the Seas.” It includes his first research yacht, where anaphylaxis was first understood. As well as essential artifacts and specimens from his many voyages.
In addition to the aquariums, the museum holds several exhibitions, including immersive virtual reality explorations and a tactile basin allowing you to stroke a starfish and feel the spikes of a sea urchin. There’s also a new escape room experience where you are challenged to save your discoveries, crew, and ship in a simulated violent storm.
You only need a few hours to discover the museum, but it’s a fantastic and exciting session for the whole family. The building and its architecture are stunning, too. It’s advised to prebook tickets, especially during the summer months. The museum is open all year round except for Christmas Day and the Grand Prix weekend.

The Monte Carlo Casino is one of the most famous casinos in the world and the epitome of luxury. The grand building is Belle Epoque in style, and James Bond fans will recognize it as the setting for the establishment in Casino Royale. This casino isn’t just for high-profile guests. Anyone over 18 can visit, but you must bring photo identification and adhere to the dress codes. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed!
Between 10 am and 1 pm, the casino is free to enter and take a self-guided tour of the beautiful halls. The games rooms are open from 2 pm. There is a selection of interactive table games and stand-alone slot machines for beginners and seasoned players. Whether you’re trying to win a fortune or just there for a sophisticated experience, look up to the incredible chandeliers and take in the opulence of the building and stunning artwork.

The casino’s exterior is also impressive with its twin domed towers and golden-shaded exterior, showcasing its opulence. The square has landscaped gardens called the Boulingrins Gardens, full of pretty flowers, water features, and luscious lawns. The “Sky Mirror” is a concave mirror that turns the world upside down, making it a fantastic photo opportunity. At Christmas, the lawn is turned into a winter wonderland.
In the square, you also get the chance to see some unique superpower or vintage cars driving through or parking up, making it a fab spot if you’re into motors. You might even spot a celebrity or two entering the casino. There are a few terraces and restaurants surrounding the square, but they can be very pricey.

The Prince’s Palace is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco. It doesn’t look particularly grand or luxurious from the outside compared to other European palaces. This is because it was fortified during the political troubles surrounding the Grimaldi rule, making it look more like a castle or parliamentary building. The palace lacks symmetry and has a blend of styles thanks to the ad-hoc expansions over the years. But its unusuality is reason enough to visit.
The changing of the guard is held at 11:55 a.m. every day, and it is an impressive performance. But remember that this is a formal ceremony where the next unit of soldiers replaces those currently protecting the palace. If you can, try and schedule your visit to see it.
Enter the palace to wander around the spectacular rooms and grand halls. A few of my favorites were the Blue Room and the Throne Room. Many of the original frescos have also recently been restored, making them even more magnificent. The palace sits on the Rocher, which is the Monaco rock. It overlooks the Mediterranean and the impressive port, and the views are another reason to trek up the hill. More about that later.

The Jardin Exotique is located just outside the city center in Fontvieille. It is also known as the “Hanging Gardens” because of its precarious location on the side of a cliff. The garden boasts incredible views of the Rocher, Palace, the ocean, and beyond. The warm Mediterranean climate allows exotic plants from Africa, Arabia, and the Caribbean to flourish here. The large and bright flowers are beautiful and offer color throughout the year.
There is a small entrance fee, including access to the gardens and the greenhouses, which are open from Tuesday to Saturday until 3:30 p.m. In the center, you can learn about all the plants and the history of the gardens. It also provides access to the cave at the base of the cliff, which is adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, natural columns, and draperies. You’ll be guided by specialists providing you with the cave’s history and interesting geological information.
I had a small window to visit the gardens, although I wish I had made more time for it. The pathways take you through the exotic natural world that offers a pretty paradox to the city of Monaco. There are benches dotted around the park with incredible views, and it would make an ideal place for a peaceful picnic.
Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology

To complete your trip to the Jardin Exotique, a visit to the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology is a must. The museum was opened in 1902 by Prince Albert I to preserve traces of early humankind found in Monaco and neighboring France and Italy. There is also a towering woolly mammoth skeleton, which is pretty impressive for adults and children alike.
There is a selection of artifacts, fossils, and other interesting finds over the centuries, giving you an insight into the history and development of this small country. You can also learn about the current excavations taking place in the cave, which retains the oldest traces of human occupation in Monaco. It is located across the road from the Botanical Center, also known as the greenhouses of the Jardin Exotique. Entry is free for those with a ticket to the gardens.

Also known as the Cathedrale Notre-Dame-Immaculee, this is Monaco’s most significant religious building, and it sits atop the Rocher. Although the cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it is known as Saint Nicholas because it sits on the site of a previous church of Saint Nicholas. The first chapel was built in the 13th century and was later converted to a cathedral in the 19th century.
This is one of the most beautiful churches I have visited, and it is graceful and lavish inside. It is home to one of the most powerful organs in the world, with over 7,000 pipes. Everywhere you look, colorful stained glass windows and mosaics glimmer with gold. There are many important religious paintings as well. At night, the cathedral and its intricate stonework are lit, and it is a remarkable sight to see.
This is where the church ceremony for the marriage of Prince Rainer III and Grace Kelly took place, which over 30 million people watched. It is also where they now rest, and many visitors pay their respects. The cathedral is located near to the Prince’s Palace. You can visit for free from 9 am until 6 pm daily, but the cathedral is closed to the public for services and ceremonies. All visitors are asked to dress respectfully, and guards are strict about shoulders being covered.

Not far from the cathedral is Jardins Saint-Martin. It was the first park opened in the area. Les Jardins Saint-Martin was built on an abandoned plot that gave residents work and space during a famine in the early 19th century. it was initially filled with Mediterranean species such as pine, holm oak, pistachio trees, and myrtle. But since then, more exotic species have flourished here.
This green space is ideal for some time out from trekking the Rocher and sightseeing. There are many benches for a picnic or shaded spaces under trees. The plants sit harmoniously with various sculptures and other art pieces spread throughout. Plus, there are multiple vantage points looking out to the deep blue ocean.

In the 1950s, Prince Rainer III began collecting classic cars, and over the years, his collection grew and grew. In 1993, he decided to move them to a location where he could display his treasures to the public. There are around 70 vehicles on display, each with an exciting history. Some are supercars that have competed in the Monaco Grand Prix, and others are classic and prestigious cars specifically built for royal weddings.
The museum is near Porte Hercule, just a few steps from the iconic Formula One circuit. As you make your way through the Prince’s fine collection, films, and exciting facts offer a complete education. There is a little gift shop for you to buy presents for other engine enthusiasts. Ticket prices for adults are around 10 euros.

You can’t go to Monaco without taking a stroll to the harbor, also known as Port Hercule, and it is one of the most famous harbors in the world. Even if you don’t get to go aboard a yacht, these vessels are impressive to view and see how the residents and visitors of this prosperous city live and travel. I love to wander along the harbor and spot the interesting names each yacht has been given.
Head up the Rocher to the observation deck, named Vue Panoramique sur Monaco or Terrace du Palais, just in front of the Prince’s Palais. Here, you can watch the big ships come in and the super yachts moor up. The best time to visit is nighttime when the harbor and the city are lit. It’s easy to see why this is one of the favorite spots on the French Riveria, thanks to the sparkling lights shimmering against the blue Med.

While you’re at the top of the Rocher, make sure to walk across from the Vue Panoramique sur Monaco to the Vue Panoramique sur Monaco-Fontvieille. Port de Fontvielle is the other main port in Monaco, and it’s where many locals moor their boats and yachts. I thought this side of the rock and port was more romantic than the main port.
This is yet another brilliant view of Monaco, and it offers some fantastic photo opportunities to showcase this luxurious city. There’s a small playpark in Fontvieille Park, just below the observation deck, where kids can burn up some extra energy if all the walking you do isn’t enough.

The Opera House of Monte Carlo is part of the Monte Carlo Casino, and locals know it as “Salle Garnier” after the architect who designed it. It is much smaller than the Paris Opera House and only seats around 520 people. But this makes it feel much more intimate. The Opera House recently had a $34 million renovation, including 80,000 gold leaves and a five-ton chandelier. If you’re after the wow factor of architecture, this could be the thing to do.
If you’re dressing up to see a show, why not make a night of it and head to the casino afterward? You’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto the set of James Bond! The season for Opera runs from October through to April. It also hosts the world-famous Monte Carlo Jazz Festival every November. Instead of seeing a show, I took a guided tour of the building, which took around 45 minutes and they take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Seeing is believing, and this is one of the grandest and most opulent places I’ve ever stepped into.

Fontvielle Park is near the Big Top, further down in this list. It is an urban landscape that is full of Mediterranean plants such as olives and pines, as well as exotic species like araucarias and strelitzias. The park has many winding paths, taking visitors on a tour of the pretty and peaceful green space. There is also a kitchen garden full of herbs and a children’s playground.
There is a pond that is home to many species, including carp, geese, and ducks. With wooden footbridges and delicate blooms, this tranquil spot is a great area to relax and enjoy the Mediterranean sun on your skin. The park is open all year round and accessible to visitors. The Princess Grace Rose Garden is in Fontvieille Park, too.

Although the Princess Grace Rose Garden is located in Fontvieille Park, it deserves its own mention and is an entirely separate garden. This park was romantically conceived by Prince Rainer III in memory of his beloved wife, Princess Grace. It has a Mediterranean feel thanks to the old olive trees and warm sea breeze, but it holds the principles of a traditional English Garden.
In the center of the garden is a bronze statue of Princess Grace. The garden is home to more than 315 rose varieties, with over 6,000 rose bushes. Each rosebush has a plaque with a scannable QR code to help visitors identify them. With seven themes, color and scent can always be enjoyed no matter what time of year you visit. It is free to enter, open all around, and there are accessible toilet facilities, too.
Princess Grace Japanese Garden

The Princess Grace Japanese Garden is an intimate and peaceful garden landscaped in a Japanese style. It was created in 1994 in accordance with the strict principles of Zen design at the request of Prince Rainer III. The principles mean you are treated to a pond, islands, a waterfall, bridges, lanterns, a tea house, and a Zen garden. Everything you see was either imported from Japan or looked after by the Japanese designer himself, implementing a genuine Japanese touch.
Take your time to stroll through the park and learn about its history and Japanese principles. The pond is full of koi carp, water lilies, and lotus flowers. If you’re seeking Zen in a busy city, this is the place to visit. Locals call it Le Jardin Japonais, and it is halfway between the casino and Lavotto Beach. It’s free to visit and open all year round.

Also known as the “Big Top,” this is the home of the Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo, and it is regarded as one of the best circus shows in the world. Prince Rainer III conceived this festival to showcase world-class circus arts, which works well in the city of glitz and glam. If you’re lucky enough to be in Monaco in January, I highly recommend you visit. It’s a show like no other and a feast for your senses.
This attraction is a big hit for families looking for fun entertainment. Be warned, they pull people from the audience to part-take. Thankfully, I wasn’t selected, but it looked like great fun. It is also a permanent event space that holds many other events, festivals, and performances throughout the year. So be sure to check out their events page for events during your visit.

Fort Antoine is an open-air theatre that was once a fortress built at the beginning of the 18th century. Under Prince Rainer III, it was rebuilt in 1953 and now showcases some of the best theatrical talent. The season for shows is usually in the month of July, although it can spill into the beginning of August. Tickets can be booked up fast, so if you’re visiting around then, be sure to check their website from June onwards. The performances are delivered in French, but many come here to watch the beauty of the performance under the stars.
The watchtower and military architecture overlooking the Med give it a unique charm. There are a handful of canons and pyramids of balls reminding you of its original purpose and the importance that it played in protecting the city. You can visit Fort Antoine for free, except during showtime. Here you can enjoy some quiet time and the warm sea breeze.

The Grand Prix circuit in Monaco hosts one of the world’s most famous Formula One races. It is held annually in May, an experience that motor enthusiasts will never forget. If you’re after an exceptional Formula One experience, you can access trackside seating either on land or on an exclusive yacht. There are also premium dining experiences to consider through various package providers.
Alternatively, you can catch a glimpse of the cars wooshing by from several viewpoints across the city. However, the views are restricted and not guaranteed as the security works hard to block viewpoints for those without a ticket. I saw the cars from Avenue de Suisse, but look for groups, and you’re sure to find more vantage points. Most bars throughout the city offer screens, and in Place d’Armes, they usually have a giant screen offering an intimate and brilliant celebratory experience.
The Fairmont Hairpin Curve is one of the most notable racing sites in the world, and it is part of the Grand Prix circuit. If you’re a racing fan, this is a top stop to watch the cars swing around. The Fairmont Monte Carlo Hotel has rooms overlooking this challenging corner, giving you frontline vantage points in total privacy.

Larvotto Beach can be accessed on Avenue Princesse Grace, and it is often described as the best beach in Monaco. The beach is man-made and covered with coarse golden sand, and the water is crystal clear. The beach is divided into free and paid areas. You can hire sunbeds and parasols in the paid areas for a more comfortable experience. However, many enjoy the free areas with their humble towels.
The beach has plenty of facilities, including changing areas, toilets, and freshwater showers. There are many cafes, restaurants, and food stalls to choose from. It’s easy to spend a whole day on the beach, recuperating from walking up and down the Rocher. You’ll also find companies offering watersports activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing, and paragliding along the French Riveria.

If you don’t fancy walking everywhere, there are a few options to get you around the place. An open-top tourist bus, Le Grand Tour, takes you on a one-hour drive around the main sites and attractions. You can also hop on and off at most of the things to do on this list. A day bus pass is just over 30 euros for an adult, but there are plenty of discounted and concession prices to check out. Tickets can be bought online.
Alternatively, look for the Monaco Bus Company (CAM) if you want to use the standard bus line. Seven lines run from 7 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., and a limited evening and night bus runs until 4 a.m. You can buy a bus pass that gives you access to all the CAM bus routes for 24 hours for under 6 euros. Tickets can be bought on the MonaPass app or directly from the driver.

Place d’Armes is at the foot of the hill up towards the Prince’s Palace. In this square, you’ll find Marche de La Condamine, which was established in 1880 and is still going strong. This market accommodates around 20 stalls selling local produce and specialized cuisine. As well as florists, jewelry makers, and other gifts. This south-facing market is graced by the sun, giving it a sunny and cheerful atmosphere.
The terracotta-colored Market Hall and the red and yellow stalls made me feel like I was in a market in sunny Spain. The market has three seating areas, with heated furniture in the colder months, where you can tuck into the food from the stalls. Be sure to check out Monegasque specialties such as barbagiuans, pissaladiere, socca, and fougasse or the fresh fish caught that morning. This is a popular market with locals, and it closes in the early afternoon.

If you’re feeling fancy and want to splash some of your cash, this shopping center has something for everyone. I went to see the exquisite architecture of this romantic mall, as well as the delicious macarons at Pierre Herme. There are many cafes and patisseries to choose from, offering a much-welcome sit down.
The central chandelier surrounded by the ornate iron staircase was a delight to see, too. It’s just a stone’s throw away from the casino, too. If you’re seeking a high-end shopping experience with the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Prada, you might want to try Avenue Princess Alice or Avenue des Beaux-Arts.

This museum is nestled within two villas, Villa Sauber and Villa Paloma. It is full of contemporary art, containing more than 10,000 works dating from the 19th and 21st centuries. There is also a collection of over 500 dolls and fancy costumes relating to the opera and circus performances. It’s a small museum but an ideal stop for modern art lovers.
This museum also has a garden and courtyard that presents other sculptures, allowing you to take a breather in this peaceful place. My favorite part of this museum was exploring the recently renovated miniature model of Monaco. This museum is home to many artworks undergoing restorative work, and sometimes, you can see the professionals in progress.

For the best view of Monaco, you need to head just over the border into France, near the French village of La Turbie. Tete de Chien translates to “dog’s head,” but it doesn’t look anything like a dog. It sits 550 meters above sea level, and you can see the whole of Monaco. It is a breathtaking view. You can also see Menton, a lovely French town, Cap d’Ail, and the border with Italy.
The best way to get here is to take the bus from Monaco to La Turbie. The bus service is run by Zou and Zestbus and departs from Jardin Exotique. It takes about 20 minutes, and from there, you have to walk for 30 minutes to Tete de Chien. This walk is high and rocky, so please take care.
Alternatively, hire a scooter for a few hours or hire a taxi. You could walk it from Monaco, but it takes several hours, is poorly signed, and is easy to get lost, so I wouldn’t recommend it. But I really would recommend taking a trip here to see the best view of Monaco, without a doubt.
