Are you in the middle of winter and craving some sun? Or perhaps you love the sun so much that you don’t want it to end? Thankfully, there are many places in the world where you can enjoy the heat no matter what time of year. And the summer rays don’t get much better than in the marvelous Mediterranean.
From the very west of Europe, such as pretty Portugal, all the way to the eastern Mediterranean coastline, including the gorgeous island of Cyprus. There are plenty of must-experience winter getaways to choose from.
Each of my picks has warm winter weather and beautiful beaches to beat your winter blues. And with plenty of other activities to enjoy, there’s something for every traveler. Other perks of winter travel include fewer tourists and, often, cheaper airfare. So, what’s not to love? Let’s look at my top 13 Mediterranean destinations for the winter.

Although Portugal doesn’t technically touch the Mediterranean Sea, it is a country in the Mediterranean because of its locality and cultural similarity with nearby countries. The Algarve is the most popular region of southern Portugal for anyone seeking sun and sand. Thanks to the Atlantic wind-whipped coastline and dreamy, golden beaches, it’s a surfer’s paradise.
If surfing isn’t your thing, there’s plenty more to do. Cities such as Faro are rich in history and full of cobbled streets, taking you to the various medieval quarters. The Arco da Vila and Estoi Palace are some of the best examples showcasing a mix of architectural styles. For a beautiful view of Faro, head to the Faro Cathedral, Se de Faro, and venture up the tower.
The Algarve is one of the most popular regions in Europe for travelers looking for beautiful, sandy beaches, and it can get swamped. But in the winter, it’s much less crowded and just as stunning. With over 300 days of sunshine annually, you can easily spend your time soaking up the sun. Winter temperatures average between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Alternatively, spend time discovering the dramatic coastline and natural caves. The Carvoeiro Boardwalk or the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail are some of the best walks this destination has to offer.

The Amalfi coast is one of the warmer regions on the eastern side of Italy’s famous Boot peninsula, and it’s also one of the prettiest. The dramatic landscape features soaring cliffs sprinkled with colorful towns overlooking the crystal-clear blue Mediterranean Sea.
The area is a UNESCO Heritage Site, and Amalfi is the largest town on this coastline. But if you want to explore the wider region, great trips are to Positano, Sorrento, Naples, or Capri.
Other popular attractions nearby include Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, which is around an hour and a half drive away, depending on your location. I’ve been to the top of Vesuvius, followed by a trip to Pompeii. The city of Roman ruins is incredibly rich in history, with plenty of well-preserved artifacts to explore.
Temperatures during the winter average between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with January typically the coldest month. However, locals and some travelers still take to the beach to relax and enjoy the winter sun and low UV count. And if you like Limoncello, you’re in for a treat because this is where the sweet after-dinner digestif originates.
Antalya, Turkey

Weather
Antalya is a city that sits along the southwestern coast of Turkey and enjoys averagely pleasant winter temperatures of 45 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Thankfully, the sea temperature doesn’t drop drastically during the colder months.
So those looking to dip their toes in the Mediterranean Ocean flock to this destination. Antalya has some of the best-ranked beaches in the country, so what better reason to visit than here?
Aspendos is close to Antalya and is home to one of the world’s best-preserved old theaters and other ancient landmarks such as the Acropolis and aqueduct. You could easily spend a day exploring these wonderfully decorated monuments, and it’s much better without the crowds, too. Other ancient cities include Perge and Termessos.
Kaleici Old Town is a top spot for an authentic old-town atmosphere thanks to the beautiful port, collection of restaurants, and the Ottoman mosque. If you’re seeking a laidback break, Antalya is prized for its sun-kissed white sandy beaches with palm trees.
What’s better than relaxing on a sun bed with a refreshing drink in hand, knowing that you’ve temporarily escaped the bleak winter weather?

Brac is a Croatian island just off the southern coast, not too far from the city of Split. There are many other islands to choose from, all offering blue sea, soft sand, and a warm winter climate. But Brac is one of the most popular for several reasons. If you fancy some island hopping, it has easy transportation links from the mainland and with other islands.
One of the most stunning places on the island, and a must-see if you’re lucky enough to visit here, is Zlatni Rat. Zlatni Rat is also called the Golden Horn Beach and is regularly voted as one of the top beaches in Europe. It’s easy to mistake this Mediterranean getaway for a Caribbean island, thanks to its white sand and clear water.
The Maestral wind makes it one of the best places to windsurf in Europe. And the fragrant pine that covers the island is delightful. In the winter, you might be the only non-local here, allowing you to see how relaxing the Croatian way of life is away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. The average temperature in December is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cannes is a popular holiday resort on the southern coast of France, also known as the French Riviera. Sitting on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea means that temperatures remain comfortably warm in the winter months. Like many of the getaways on this list, the average temperature in December is between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although Cannes is known for its glitz and glam lifestyle and association with wealthy travelers, you can visit here on a comfortable budget. Especially in the winter when traveling costs are heavily discounted. To get a feel of how the other half lives, stroll down the Promenade de la Croisette, the waterfront avenue lined with lights and palm trees.
You’re spoilt for choice on the French Riveria if you’re seeking blue seas and sand between your toes. You have access to the entire southern French coast and easy access to Italy.
I took a boat trip to St Tropez from Cannes, enjoying the lush greenery sprinkled with rich mansions and terracotta-colored towns. Take advantage of the quiet season and book yourself on a French cooking lesson with a Provencal chef.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Med and has diverse attractions. You are truly spoilt for choice from the party destination on the east, Aiya Napa, and the romantically picturesque Paphos on the west side. I have been to Cyprus twice to both destinations, and I highly recommend both depending on what type of winter getaway you’re after.
Paphos is a fantastic destination for the winter, and it has so much to offer tourists. If you want to explore the town’s history, check out the Tombs of the Kings and the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park. Nearby are picturesque bi-level waterfalls with natural swimming areas. Many of the beaches on the Cypriot coastline offer warm, golden sand and twinkling blue waters – some of the most transparent water I’ve ever seen!
Cyprus’s winter temperatures usually hover around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. It is slightly warmer than some other destinations on my list during winter. Unlike some cities during the winter, Cyprus usually stays open, and opening hours are relatively unchanged, which makes exploring the island a little easier.

Next up is the party island of Ibiza. Ibiza is one of the party capitals of Europe, but there is so much more to this town than early-morning raves and thumping music. But if that’s what you’re seeking, many clubs open their doors during the winter.
Exploring Ibiza in winter allows you to escape the sweltering heat and avoid competing with crowds. The average temperature falls between 57 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit in December.
Dalt Vila is a fortified Upper Town with narrow, cobblestone streets and cozy bars offering tasty tapas. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is enjoyed by the locals, who enjoy its charming atmosphere during the winter away from the partying crowds. The Cathedral is the star of the show and offers excellent views over the port.
Not many people know that Ibiza is full of natural beauty and offers some of the most incredible sunsets in the Mediterranean region. In January, the almond trees blossom, filling the island with a lovely fragrance and a sea of pink. The entire coastline has beaches to laze on and caves to explore. So, no matter what you’re after for your winter vacation, Ibiza has it all.

What better way to escape the bleak winter than to take a trip to the Costa Del Sol? Malaga lies on the southern coastline of Spain and overlooks the vast seascape of the bright blue Mediterranean Sea. I have been to Malaga many times on vacation and lived on the Costa Del Sol for a while. But having recently traveled to Malaga in December, I am a massive fan of this beautiful town in the winter months.
There were very few tourists in Malaga during December, and the town was buzzing with friendly locals. Soaking in the relaxing Spanish atmosphere and enjoying Sangria while Christmas shopping was fab. And what better way to celebrate the holidays than by enjoying one of Europe’s best Christmas light shows while singing “Feliz Navidad” with the Spanish crowds? It was awesome!
The average December temperature in Malaga is between 53 and 60. Head to the nearby beach with a picnic and a book, and enjoy. Many locals were swimming in the sea, so if you’re brave enough, why not join them? Alternatively, if you’re after some sightseeing in one of the oldest cities in the world, take a tour around Malaga Cathedral and Gibralfaro Castle. Whatever you choose to do, Malaga is a must-see winter destination.

Malta is an enchanting island between Sicily and the North African coast in the middle of the Med. If you want to enjoy the Med Sea, swimming spots aren’t much better than the Blue Lagoon in Comino. The island is rocky and rugged, and so is the coastline. There are plenty of natural swimming pools and coves to explore, with plenty of diving spots to choose from.
It is a must-see because it is steeped in history, thanks to its succession of rulers, such as the Romans, Moors, British, and French, each having an influence. With many fortresses and megalithic temples to explore, it is a dream for history buffs, especially when you don’t have to fight the neverending queues.
One of the best places to visit is the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an ancient underground temple. It is open to the public, but be warned, tickets sell out months in advance, so it’s essential to pre-book your tickets for this. Thankfully, there’s much less competition in the winter months.
Santorini, Greece

Explore Oia’s sunset, Fira’s charm, Akrotiri ruins, Red Beach, wine tour, and more in Santorini
Weather
Santorini is one of the most photographed and recognizable islands in Greece. It sits around 200 km southeast of Athens and is a relatively small island around the same size as Manhatten. No matter where you stay on the island, you are greeted with the traditional bright white buildings complete with blue roofs. Santorini is a must-visit destination any time of year, but particularly in the winter when it isn’t so crowded.
From the island’s west side, you can enjoy spectacular views of the bay created by one of the most significant volcanic events in human history circa 1600 BC. Some of the best cliff-side towns to stay in are Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. They offer the best views, and although they are some of the most expensive, they are discounted for the off-season.
The island’s east and south sides boast incredible beaches that meet the glowing periwinkle sea. Here, you can enjoy the sunrise and the cheaper side of the island. Some of the best east-side towns include Perissa, Perivolos, and Kamari, home to the best Santorini beaches.
Pack comfy footwear, take advantage of the cooler climate and hiking conditions, and complete the caldera hike from Fira to Oia for the best views of the volcano and Mediteranean Bay. The average temperature in December falls between 52 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Med and the temperatures in December range from 44 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. That is unless you travel inland to the mountainous areas that receive lots of snow. But in the many bays and beaches of Sardinia, you can avoid the cold, bask in the winter sun, and enjoy the tranquility of the empty beaches. Some of the best are La Pelosa Beach, Cala Mariolu, and Porto Giunco.
Sardinia isn’t just famous for its beaches and turquoise water. It’s also renowned for its history, with a civilization older than the Romans. Thousands of Nuragic ruins are dotted around the entire island, so you’ll never be too far from one. The best known is Barumini, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of the main attractions of Sardinia is the influences that different cultures have on their food. And although Sardinia is an Italian island, don’t expect to find traditional dishes like carbonara or lasagne. Local specialties include culurgiones, malloreddus, porceddu, and casu marzu, Sardiania’s famous “rotten cheese.”
The main town of Cagliari is the busiest, with bustling restaurants full of cheerful locals. You’ll find colorful coastal towns like Bosa Castle scattered throughout the island. This and many others are regularly listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy. There’s so much to do in Sardinia, and being smack bang in the middle of the Med, it’s a must-see winter destination.
Sicily, Italy

Activities

The island of Sicily is the largest in the Mediterranean Sea and sits at the end of the Italian boot. Some travelers suggest that Sicily is full of wonders best explored in milder temperatures. The average temperature in December is between 50 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Making trekking around the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, like the Greek Theatre of Taormina and the Valley of the Temples, much more pleasant.
In addition to these attractions, many old-feel towns are waiting to be explored. Palermo is the most well-known town and has claimed many titles. Palermo is the second-largest historical center in Europe; it is the most conquered city in history and has one of the largest numbers of UNESCO sites, such as the impressively diverse Cathedral and Palatine Chapel.
If you’re looking for beaches to warm your winter bones up, there’s a great selection to choose from. Isola Bella is an excellent choice if you’re searching for snorkeling spots. For a unique beach with incredible scenery, choose Scala dei Turchi’s stepped beach. Alternatively, for white sand, Spiaggia dei Conigli is your best bet. Whatever your coastal choice, your sun-kissed skin will appreciate the winter vitamin D.

Last but not least, it is one of my favorite European destinations, let alone Greece. Commonly known as Zante, it is one of the Ionian islands on the west side of Greece. Crystal-clear waters surround Zakynthos, and it is one of the best places in Greece to see turtles. Zante has some incredible beaches, from the golden Banana beach to Agios Nikolaos beach.
My favorite is Laganos Beach because that’s where I spotted lots of turtles! But it has lots of amenities and water sports activity options too. At the end of the beach is Cameo Island, famous for being the wedding venue in Mamma Mia. The shaky walkway leads you to the dancing white flags and quiet beach where you can snorkel and hunt for special sea glass.
The hotel I stayed in shuts its doors for winter, but there are many other accommodation options to choose from. The average temperature sits between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which is comfortable for winter beach lazing and much more enjoyable without the crowds. Zante is one of the greenest Greek islands, which makes a stunning backdrop for the deep-blue sea.
Key Takeaways
Nothing compares to the feeling of the sun kissing your skin and sinking your toes into the warm sand. And beating the winter blues is much easier knowing you’ve got a trip to the Med planned. There are so many destinations on offer, whether you want to laze around on the beach or explore ancient cities.
And there are many reasons to travel out of season. I love traveling in the winter because I struggle with the soaring summer heat. Plus, winter getaways are usually less busy, cheaper, and much more relaxed. So, be sure to avoid shoulder season and say hello to some much-needed winter sun. Let us know about your favorite Mediterranean winter getaways in the comments.
