Gilbert, Arizona, is the perfect blend of small-town charm and urban sophistication. I grew up in Gilbert, only moving away to attend Arizona State University. I moved back at 24 years old, and lived there for another 15 years while raising my young family at the time, so we spent plenty of time trying to figure out “what to do this weekend.”
Featuring numerous attractions, Gilbert is a great place for culture enthusiasts, nature lovers and foodies alike. Because of the close proximity to Scottsdale, Chandler, and the greater Phoenix area, you’ll find easy access to a variety of Arizona attractions you can enjoy.
Ranging from the lush landscapes of Riparian Preserve to the charming historical Heritage District, there’s something for everyone! We’ve done the research for you and curated a list of the my favorite things to do when you’re visiting Gilbert, Arizona. Let’s dive in!

When you’re in Gilbert, Arizona, you can’t miss visiting Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch. While not as iconic as the red rocks of Sedona, the Preserve is a fun experience for nature lovers. The 110-acre oasis features more than 200 species of birds, making it a must-see for bird watchers.
This is a fantastic stop if you are looking for a run on some less crowded trails with some nature, and also makes a great location for young children to spend some time outdoors. We frequented the Riparian preserve when our kids were little, and I would enjoy the occasional jog here in the fall afternoons.
The Preserve also features seven water basins, diverse wildlife, and sprawling nature trails – it’s a sanctuary within the city! Whether you’re interested in hiking, photography, or looking at the stars from the on-site observatory, there’s something for everyone.

Agritopia is a truly innovative urban farm community in the heart of Gilbert, blending agriculture, community, and suburban living. This neighborhood spreads over 160 acres and leads the way when it comes to farm-to-table living.
At the heart of the Agritopia district is a 16-acre organic farm that produces crops all year round. This both beautifies the landscape and provides fresh produce to the community and local businesses.
I lived in Agritopia for a decade, and there’s plenty to do in this little area, especially with the creation of the Epicenter, which has plenty of shops. It’s a very popular location for holiday tours, including being a great place to trick or treat at Halloween, or having one of the best Christmas light displays in the entire state during the month of December.
The homegrown produce can be sampled at local farm-to-table dining establishments, including Joe’s Farm Grill and The Coffee Shop. It’s great to know the food you are eating was grown only minutes away! The Coffee Shop was a particular favorite location of ours, and I highly recommend trying the “San Diegan Omelette.”
The community also features artisan shops and creative spaces, giving it a vibrant, creative atmosphere. With regular farmer’s markets and community events, there’s always something to do or see at Agritopia!

If you’re in Gilbert and feeling peckish, run, don’t walk, to Joe’s Real BBQ! A true Gilbert institution, Joe’s is located in a historic 1929 building so you can combine history and a good meal in one sitting.
Joe’s Real BBQ is committed to authenticity in its BBQ process. Meats are smoked for hours over Arizona pecan wood, eschewing gas, electricity, or shortcuts.
The result? A depth of flavor and tenderness that’s second to none. As well as the meat, Joe’s prepares 12 side dishes from scratch each day – making the perfect accompaniment to their delicious smoked meats.
Joe’s Real BBQ is more than a restaurant. It’s a testament to Gilbert’s history, a hub of community gatherings, and a must-visit destination for BBQ lovers. After living in the south for the last several years, this is one of the few BBQ places I’ve been to in Arizona that I think could thrive in the South, where BBQ is a weekly staple for most families.
